Megan Dotchin is an 18 year old musician from Middlesbrough with a bucket load of talent and she sent over some of her tracks when they were still in their demo stages and I got to work pulling them apart to see what they were all about.
Firstly, Megan is an excellent songwriter and she captures the essence of youth culture in her track Song Of The Times. It's a reflection of how kids are perceived in society, which is often negatively. It even quotes music legend John Lennon who famously sang "Give Peace A Chance". Listening to the track, it's filled with eloquence as Megan lyrically shuns these perceptions and expresses how youth aren't all the same. The gentle, acoustic guitar melody really allows Megan's voice and lyrics to speak for themselves; they accompany each other well to reinforce the message embedded in this track. It's inspiring to know that Megan is taking note of these issues that are oftenly overlooked and featuring them in her music - this really defines Megan's authenticity and originality.
Megan describes her track Devil's Smile as "wishing a certain person would act this way with you" and it is a different sound to what she has previously produced. It is a simply arranged and effortless song that 'tugs on the heartstrings' as it describes an imaginary closeness between two people. The cleverly written lyrics and moving melody certainly make it a favourite of mine.
Next, I took a look at One Line and it's a cool tune with essences of Jake Bugg. The track showcases Megan's voice with the extended notes that she sings. There is a slight raspiness to her voice which gives her a really distinctive and memorable tone. There are no gimmicks with Megan's music and it can be appreciated more because she has identified with her own style and isn't copying anyone else. There is a certified future for Megan in this industry.
Visit Megan's SoundCloud and experience her excellent material for yourselves. She has a few gigs lined up next month and you can find her at Doctor Browns, Middlesbrough on 6th March, Three Tuns, Gateshead on 11th March and 21st March in O'Connells, Middlesbrough.
