The Revolve - Interview with the newest rock 'n' roll band
I met up with North East band The Revolve before their debut gig at Doctor Browns, Middlesbrough. I was in touch with guitarist, Aidan, who kindly organised an interview and I learned a bit more about them.
On first thought, the band were incredibly sociable and enthusiastic. Something that seems to be inherent in young, upcoming bands. Also, there was a lot of banter between them which often resulted in the odd dig at each other which made for amusing company. One thing that you couldn't deny was the chemistry between them. They clearly shared a mutual passion for music and being in the band. Taking their influences from the likes of Oasis, The Jam, The Beatles and Arctic Monkeys, this powerhouse of a band are definitely ones to watch!
The name sparked some interest in me - what is its significance?
Aidan: The name was picked from The Beatles' album, Revolver. We decided to shorten it and add the 'the' like geniuses.
Jordan: Yeah we all met at a Beady Eye gig, and came across the idea when we were adding each other on snapchat! Josh's name on it was to do with the Beatles album and it just stuck!
Ha ha! One thing I wondered is if your image is influenced by music? Particularly your style and how you dress...
Aidan: Yeah, I think it all comes together... You can't look like a mess on stage or even out and about.
Josh: Yeah, if you're gonna be in a rock n roll band, you may as well look the part.
Jordan: I don't think either one is influenced by the other, it just works a lot better when they compliment each other without looking like a cliche.
Now, this question is aimed particularly at Jordan, your frontman, as he can speak for himself. Do you think that frontmen have a reputation?
Jordan: I think frontmen have a huge reputation to uphold, it's hard to distinguish yourself as a frontman because it's all been done before! I'd like to think positive and negative goes hand in hand with rock and roll frontmen.. People love somebody they can dislike! I'd rather come across as cheeky rather than arrogant though...
Half of you are from Sunderland and half from Middlesbrough so, who would you say had the better local music scene?
Aidan: The two best gigs we've had we're in Boro... We love playing anywhere but Boro is becoming our home I think
Josh: I'd say Middlesbrough but yano...
Jordan: I still like Sunderland but I can't argue with a good Boro crowd! I don't want to lose my teeth!
Looking at gigs, what do you think about them? Do you think that they're pointless because of the lack of interest in them?
Aidan: No not at all! We love gigging. It's why we became a band to play the music we write to people and gain fans. It's the highlight of being in a band.
Josh: I agree.
Focusing on your music specifically, do you all have the same music taste?
Josh: We all agree with the same music... Obviously the music we write is influenced by who we listen to.
Aidan: Yeah we all have the same taste which helps a lot and when we write songs, you can see the resemblance to some bands.
Jordan: We all come from slightly different musical backgrounds, but they all stem from the same place which means we can get a nice mix of everything that can take people back in time but also look forward and form our own path.
How do you think of the name of a song? I often think of that as a difficult process, how does The Revolve go about it?
Josh: Usually it's what is the most repeated or what would look the best as a title. But, sometimes, I think of a good title and revolve the song around that (no pun intended!)
Aidan: I pick the best sounding lyric from a song and hope it would look good on the back of an album and they all have so far so that's what I'm going to keep doing.
The banter is undeniable between you all. You're all taking the piss out of each other but I wanna know who you think is the funniest?
Josh: Well, we all have our moments.
Aidan: I think Butters is a good giggle but we all have a good laugh.
